Buccaneers' Koetter: 'I don't know what's wrong with Roberto Aguayo'

The question being asked in Tampa Bay is what's wrong with second-round draft pick Roberto Aguayo.

The kicker deemed "Mr. Perfect" in college has been decidedly less so after just two preseason games in the NFL. He missed the first kick he ever attempted in the pros - a point-after attempt - and then missed the third kick of his career - a 32 yarder - Saturday night in Jacksonville. He also pushed a 49-yard kick wide right late in the game.

"I don't know what's wrong with Roberto right now," Bucs head coach Dirk Koetter told reporters Sunday.

"Maybe there's some nerves in there, I don't know. He might be overthinking it. There's definitely pressure on him. It is the preseason, it's the time to work it out, but I'm not the guy that can help him. I'm not that guy."

Koetter's last remark came after he was asked what he can do to help his rookie kicker, besides yelling and swearing at him, which he admits he resorts to.

"He's been pretty consistent in practice - but in both of the preseason games he's missed kicks that he's expected to make," said Koetter. " ... We can make all kinds of excuses but the bottom line is he's expected to make those kicks. He knows it, of course. Everybody knows it and we can't hide behind it. We can't hide behind any of our mistakes and trust me, I'm making more than anybody out there but yeah, he's got to make them."

After Aguayo's first miss on Saturday, he rebounded by nailing a 28-yard kick, a 34-yard field goal, and three extra points, but the long miss that followed will do nothing to quell the growing firestorm of criticism.

Aguayo still has two weeks to inspire confidence ahead of the regular season, beginning Friday against the Cleveland Browns.
