Florida State's Sean Maguire out about 4 weeks with foot injury

Florida State quarterback Sean Maguire will miss approximately four weeks due to a foot injury and is expected to be sidelined for the team's season opener, head coach Jimbo Fisher announced Saturday.

Fisher said Maguire will undergo surgery on a broken bone in his right foot, and have a screw inserted. The injury is unrelated to his previous foot issue. He suffered a broken left ankle in the Peach Bowl on New Year's Eve, and had to go under the knife to get it repaired.

The Seminoles, Fisher added, are hopeful Maguire will be ready to return by the second or third game of the season.

Florida State's early-season schedule:

Date Opponent
Mon. Sept. 5 vs. Ole Miss (in Orlando)
Sat. Sept. 10 vs. Charleston Southern
Sat. Sept. 17 at Louisville

Maguire missed the vast majority of Florida State's offseason program while recovering from the ankle injury. He didn't participate in Saturday's practice, either, instead watching it with a walking boot over his ailing foot. Fisher said he sustained the injury Wednesday, on the second day of practice.

The senior was expected to enter this season as Florida State's starting quarterback after he snatched the job from Everett Golson last year and finished the season playing relatively well. In parts of eight contests, he threw for 1,520 yards, 11 touchdowns, and six interceptions.

With Maguire on the shelf, the Seminoles appear likely to start redshirt freshman Deondre Francois in their season opener versus Ole Miss, though Fisher elected not to declare him the starter Saturday.
