Mozgov suffers groin injury during friendly with Russian national team

The Los Angeles Lakers' marquee free-agent signing couldn't make it through the summer unscathed.

Timofey Mozgov, who signed with the Lakers for four years and $64 million last month, suffered a groin injury while playing for the Russian national team in a friendly against Ukraine on Friday, Mike Bresnahan of the LA Times reports.

Mozgov is scheduled to undergo an MRI on Saturday.

The 30-year-old center struggled to find his form last season with the Cleveland Cavaliers, after undergoing knee surgery in the summer of 2015. He slumped to his lowest scoring, rebounding, assist, and block rates in three years, and fell out of the Cavs' rotation entirely in the playoffs.

That didn't prevent the Lakers from lavishing him with an above-market offer on the first day of free agency. They may come to regret that deal if Mozgov again struggles to keep his body in working order.
