New York law firm reaching out to UFC fighters for potential union

A New York law firm is testing the waters in an attempt at forming a fighters' union.

Following the recent sale of the UFC and the long-awaited legalization of MMA in the state of New York, law firm Lichten and Bright sent out a letter in July in which they vowed to contact hundreds of UFC fighters, according to Steven Marrocco of MMAjunkie.

A number of fighters and managers have responded with interest in forming a union, according to Daniel Bright, one half of Lichten and Bright. Should their efforts be met with a substantial enough response, Bright said the next step would be to hold a meeting.

The subject of a fighters' union is nothing new. Along with salaries and health insurance, it's been a recurring talking point, especially in the aftermath of the sale of the UFC. The law firm's letter reports a median fighter purse in the range of $17,000-$23,000 and a 5-15 percent share of the promotion's revenue.

The letter states that a 50 percent take of the revenue, akin to the current structure of the NBA, would generate an average of $500,000 for every UFC fighter per year. Health insurance, pensions, and negotiating rights were also mentioned as perks the UFC roster is not privy to.

The firm says it boasts a combined 40 years of experience in labor litigation.
