Cashman: A-Rod free to sign with another team

Alex Rodriguez may be playing his final game in pinstripes on Friday, but the door to playing again in another uniform hasn't been entirely closed.

Speaking at a press conference announcing the impending end of Rodriguez's tenure in the Bronx, New York Yankees general manager Brian Cashman stated the 41-year-old would be free to sign with another team and continue his playing career if he chooses to do so, despite being retained by the Yankees as an advisor and instructor for 2017.

"Of course he is (free to go elsewhere)," Cashman explained to reporters. "Once the contract is released, the full force of that contract is owed to him. There is nothing that can happen after that fact that you can go back and turn back that clock.

"He'll have a decision (if a team contacts him), and I don't think anybody here would stand in his way in any way shape or form," Cashman continued.

For now at least, Rodriguez isn't looking for a new home, and is concentrating on the week leading up to his farewell contest at Yankee Stadium on Friday.

"Honestly, my horizon is pinstripes and Friday," he told FOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal in an exclusive interview. "It's been such an emotional couple of days that I can't really think beyond that right now."

He does believe, however, that he's got some baseball left in him despite being mired in a career-worst season.

A-Rod sits just four home runs shy of becoming just the fourth player with 700 career homers.
