Report: Beno Udrih has standing offer to join Heat
The Miami Heat are looking to repay a favor to Beno Udrih.
Udrih has a standing invitation to join the Heat on a veteran's minimum deal, Ira Winderman of the Sun Sentinel reports.
On the surface, it would appear strange that the Heat would be so generous to a 34-year-old backup point guard coming off a serious foot injury. Udrih is a capable player, sure, but the Heat are extending a huge courtesy to a run-of-the-mill veteran.
Or perhaps the Heat are simply repaying a debt. Udrih and the team agreed to a buyout following his foot surgery in February that allowed the Heat to duck under the luxury-tax threshold. Udrih generously left enough money on the table to save the Heat nearly $110,000 in taxes, while also allowing the team to cash in on a $2.6-million payout from taxpayers.
Teams at the time were reportedly upset by what appears to be a very transparent under-the-table arrangement.
