Giants deal top prospect for Brewers' Smith
The San Francisco Giants have moved to bolster their bullpen ahead of the trade deadline, agreeing to acquire left-hander Will Smith from the Milwaukee Brewers, the clubs announced.
In exchange for Smith, the Brewers will receive top pitching prospect Phil Bickford and catcher Andrew Susac.
Smith had been a coveted arm among contenders at this year's deadline. The 27-year-old is in the midst of an excellent season as the Brewers' set-up man, owning a 3.68 ERA in 27 games pitched. He missed a portion of the season after tearing a ligament in his knee while taking off his shoe.
Smith has two years of arbitration remaining before reaching free agency.
Bickford, ranked by MLB Pipeline as the Giants' No. 1 prospect, owns a 2.71 ERA and is averaging over 10 strikeouts per nine innings this season. The former first-round pick was recently promoted to the Giants' High-A affiliate in San Jose.
Susac owns a .240/.309/.407 slash line in 87 career big-league contests in 2014 and 2015. He's yet to play in the big leagues this season. The 26-year-old owns a .273/.343/.455 line with eight homers at Triple-A Sacramento.
