San Francisco 49ers defensive tackle Ian Williams will miss the 2016 season after the club placed him on the reserve/non-football injury list Saturday.

Williams, who underwent ankle surgery in the offseason, signed a one-year deal with San Francisco in March. The club initially signed him to a five-year contract, but the deal was altered when he failed a physical.

The 26-year-old played in 16 games last season, racking up 65 total tackles, one sack, and one forced fumble.

The move allowed the 49ers to add offensive tackle Anthony Davis back onto the roster, after his reinstatement from retirement was approved by the league.
