D.C. United acquires Igboananike from Chicago Fire

Mike DiNovo-USA TODAY Sports

D.C. United announced Friday the club has acquired Designated Player Kennedy Igboananike from the Chicago Fire in exchange for targeted allocation money (TAM) and a natural third-round draft pick in the 2019 MLS SuperDraft.

The Nigerian forward joined the Fire last season and has bagged 11 goals in 49 league appearances, starting all 18 matches this season for last-place Chicago.

"We are pleased to have acquired Kennedy," D.C. United general manager Dave Kasper said in a statement. "He has shown in a short amount of time in MLS that he is a dangerous attacker who can create and score goals."

Despite being traded, Igboananike will continue to be classified as a Designated Player on Chicago's roster in 2016, and the Fire would also retain a percentage of any future transfer fee if the player is transferred outside of MLS this year.

"Moves like this are needed in order to execute our plan for roster development," Chicago general manager Nelson Rodriguez said in a club statement. "Kennedy puts his heart into his work and has served this club well. We wish him the best in D.C. and wherever his career leads him."
