Ex-Texas A&M LB Antonio Armstrong, wife shot dead in home

Thomas Campbell-US PRESSWIRE

Former Texas A&M linebacker Antonio Armstrong and his wife, Dawn, were shot and killed in their Houston home Friday morning.

Armstrong's wife died in the couple's bedroom, while the former Aggie was taken to Memorial Hermann Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

Texas A&M head coach Kevin Sumlin released a statement on the passing of the former Aggie player.

Our thoughts and prayers are with Antonio Armstrong and his family, his old teammates and the entire Aggie family. Our strength coach Larry Jackson was a teammate of Antonio's and thought the world of him. This is a terrible tragedy and our hearts are broken.

A 16-year-old has been charged with the murder. The identity of the suspect has not been released because he is a juvenile.

R.C. Slocum, who was head coach at Texas A&M while Armstrong was an Aggie, also released a statement, highlighting the positives from Armstrong's life.

Antonio was a special young man. He was an All-American and an outstanding player, but he was an even better person. He was such a positive influence on his teammates. He always had a great big smile and was a joy to coach.

In his junior year with Aggies, Armstrong was named Defensive Player of the Game in the 1994 Cotton Bowl against Notre Dame and he was named a first-team All-American that same year. Armstrong was selected in the sixth round of the 1995 NFL Draft by the San Francisco 49ers and went on to play four games with the Miami Dolphins that year.
