Rams release Nick Foles

The Los Angeles Rams announced the release of Nick Foles on Wednesday, officially making the veteran quarterback a free agent after just one year with the team.

The move comes after failed trade attempts and a request to be released from Foles, reports Mike Garafolo of NFL Network.

"We have been in contact with Nick and his representation throughout the offseason and we feel that this is the best decision for all parties involved," head coach Jeff Fisher said in a release. "We appreciate the contributions that Nick has made to our organization in his time as a Ram and wish him the best of luck in his future endeavors."

Acquired from the Philadelphia Eagles in a blockbuster trade that sent Sam Bradford the other way last offseason, Foles was unable to live up to expectations upon joining the Rams.

He completed just 56.4 percent of his passes across 11 starts, throwing for 2,052 yards, seven touchdowns, and 10 interceptions.

The disappointing year was a leading factor in the Rams' decision to trade up and select Jared Goff at No. 1 overall in this year's draft, all but ensuring Foles' time with the organization was nearing its end.

Foles will immediately hit the open market, and should be coveted by teams seeking either a backup signal-caller or veteran competition.

The Rams will move forward with a training camp competition between Goff and Case Keenum, with Sean Mannion presumably slated for third-string duties.
