Fantasy Fallout: Anquan Boldin's fantasy impact figures to be minimal at first

Cary Edmondson / USA TODAY Sports

Here are the fantasy repercussions of the Detroit Lions signing WR Anquan Boldin to a one-year contract:

Boldin had one of his worst statistical seasons with the San Francisco 49ers in 2015 when he managed 789 yards on 69 receptions and only four touchdowns. It was his lowest yardage total since his sophomore season in Arizona in 2004, when he totaled 623 yards in only 10 games.

Moving to Detroit, he should fit in as the WR3 behind the returning Golden Tate and fellow free agent acquisition Marvin Jones. As far as his fantasy projections are concerned, he shouldn't be considered in standard leagues unless they are incredibly deep. Reserve him as a late-round selection in 14-team formats.

His addition should marginally impact Tate and Jones, though it shouldn't result in a huge dropoff for either. Tate should still be taken just outside the top 20 receivers and Jones in the mid-to-late 30s. Likewise, it may slightly diminish TE Eric Ebron's involvement in the passing game, but not enough to slide him down in terms of ADP between the 13th and 16th tight end.

The situation is more interesting for QB Matthew Stafford. Currently being drafted as the 17th quarterback, Stafford gains a proven receiver and intriguing slot option. Stafford attempted 592 passes in 2015 and this could increase. While he has lost Calvin Johnson to retirement, the volume of viable options has improved. He's worth considering as a QB2 just in case.

Where Boldin will fit best is as a late-round flier in best ball formats. These require drafting in bulk, and if Boldin has even a couple of big weeks, he will be worth the late selection. His quarterback situation is stronger than it was in 2015, but his role will be reduced. Similar or fewer yards with an uptick in TDs is reasonable.

Boldin is also an injury to Tate or Jones away from being relevant in shallower leagues, so be ready to pounce on the waiver wire if this should occur. He has high upside despite being 35 years old.
