Chael Sonnen is keeping the door open for a return to MMA, even if it's a narrow opening.

The three-time UFC title contender has not competed in the Octagon in almost three years, but USADA officials report that he has taken two out-of-competition drug tests to make himself available for reinstatement, according to John Morgan and Mike Bohn of MMAjunkie.

Having officially retired from the sport, Sonnen is required to undergo four months of USADA testing before being eligible to fight again.

Sonnen is nearing the end of a two-year suspension that was handed down on July 23, 2014 after he tested positive for multiple performance-enhancing substances.

The 39-year-old fighter has never made excuses for cheating and he provided a grim response when asked if he'll be given a clean record this time around.

"Not if the test is as good as I remember it being," Sonnen said.
