Newcastle United midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum is set for a medical at Liverpool after the clubs agreed on a £25-million deal in the early hours of Thursday, reports the Guardian's Louise Taylor.

Rafa Benitez praised the professionalism that the Dutch midfielder showed when he took to training ahead of Newcastle's Championship return, but it appears that Spanish gaffer will now be scratching around to replace one of the rare bright spots of a dire 2015-16.

The fee's reportedly an initial £23 million, with £1 million due when Wijnaldum reaches a certain amount of appearances and the same fee if Liverpool hits certain club targets. A makeweight in the deal could be Lucas Leiva, the Brazilian midfielder who was taken to Anfield by Benitez in 2007.

Klopp hinted that there could be departures from Merseyside earlier this week, and one of those heading for the exit could be Joe Allen. The Welshman was reportedly the subject of a £13-million bid from Stoke City that was accepted.

Wijnaldum's potential transfer would be felt at St James' Park - he bagged a commendable 11 goals during the relegation campaign - but at least it would turn a quick profit. The 25-year-old joined from PSV Eindhoven for £14.5 million last summer.

Ahead of his first full season in charge of Liverpool, Klopp has so far brought Joel Matip, Loris Karius, Sadio Mane, and Ragnar Klavan to L4.
