Florida's Treon Harris completes move to WR
The Florida quarterback position remains a wide-open race, but one player who won't be lining up under center is Treon Harris.
Harris took over after starter Will Grier was suspended for a drug violation following the Gators' 6-0 start. The Miami native struggled to lead the Florida passing attack and the program limped to a 4-4 finish. Grier has since transferred to West Virginia, and coach Jim McElwain confirmed Harris will move to receiver.
"You've got to look at the fit," McElwain told ESPN's Ivan Maisel. "Nothing he did. Guys around him didn't play great either, so I'll never put that on a player."
McElwain inherited the former seventh-ranked dual-threat quarterback prospect upon taking the job prior to last season. Harris certainly wasn't a good fit for his pro-style passing system, but is a great athlete who could thrive on the outside.
Harris was suspended in January due to violating the student code of conduct and missed spring practice. Luke Del Rio, Austin Appleby, Feleipe Franks, and Kyle Trask are the four candidates to take the Gators' starting role this season.
"We're not in this to hurt anybody's feelings, but at the same time, it is what it is and we've got four guys I'm really proud of," McElwain said. "The (quarterback) room is really good and I'm excited about it."
Florida opens the season Sept. 3 against UMass.
