Charlie Strong: No reason for Texas to go 6-7

Charlie Strong knows he's on the hot seat this season.

The Texas head coach is coming off back-to-back losing campaigns in his first two years in charge of the Longhorns and knows he won't survive a third.

"The expectations here are always high, which they should be. ... There is no reason for us to go 6-7 and 5-7 and you want to see progress," Strong said Tuesday at Big 12 media day. "I totally agree with that and we should, and that's what we're working for. Our goal is to win every game and it's the work to go win those games and they shouldn't be any different."

Texas is used to competing for national championships, but it's gone 11-14 since Strong took the job while watching TCU and Baylor pass it in the Big 12 pecking order.

Strong presumably needs at least eight wins to avoid a pink slip, but it won't be easy. The Longhorns have to deal with Notre Dame, Cal, Oklahoma State, and Oklahoma in four of their first five games.

There's a realistic chance the Longhorns could lose three or possibly even all four of those games, so Texas could be pondering a coaching change as early as October.
