Mourinho begins United tenure with friendly win over Wigan

Jose Mourinho is off to a winning start at Manchester United, as the Red Devils defeated Wigan 2-0 Saturday in the Portuguese manager's first preseason match in charge of the club.

Goals from James Wilson and Andreas Pereira were enough for the Premier League behemoth to secure the win, the former scoring after a terrible mistake from goalkeeper Jussi Jaaskelainen before the latter clinched the win with a fierce strike in the 59th minute.

"Very happy," Mourinho said after the match. "The result obviously is not the most important thing - but it is always important. But I'm happy with seeing things that we tried in training and some principles of our play - defensively and offensively - that we worked on in training and I could see them there.

"Everybody played. Everybody had a positive performance."

Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Eric Bailly, two of the club's opulent new signings, made their debuts, with the Armenian attacker the standout player in the opening 45 minutes.

Luke Shaw also made his long-awaited return to the pitch, featuring in his first match since suffering a double fracture in his right leg 10 months ago.

United's next match will come July 22, when the Red Devils begin their tour of China with an International Champions Cup clash against Borussia Dortmund.
