The New York Jets and defensive lineman Muhammad Wilkerson agreed to a long-term extension ahead of Friday's 4 p.m. ET deadline, the team announced.

The deal will pay Wilkerson roughly $85 million over five seasons, with $54 million in guarantees and $37 million fully guaranteed, a source told Ian Rapoport of NFL Network.

The deal came out of nowhere, after the two sides appeared to be extremely far apart during negotiations. Talks reportedly picked up between the Jets and Wilkerson's representatives over the 12 hours leading up to the deadline.

During his 2015 contract season, Wilkerson tallied 64 tackles and 12 sacks, and was unblockable during stretches of the year.

With Wilkerson locked up, the Jets will boast one of the best defensive lines in 2016, with Sheldon Richardson and Leonard Williams also in the mix. However, the lucrative contract likely means the Jets will let Richardson walk after his fifth-year option expires in 2017.
