Douglas Costa ruled out of Brazil's Rio 2016 campaign

Bayern Munich winger Douglas Costa will be unable to participate at the 2016 Olympics in Rio due to an ongoing issue with his left thigh.

"I greatly regret this," said Bayern club chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge. "We all wanted Douglas to contest the Olympic Games in his home country, but the player's health and fitness takes priority."

Costa missed out on Brazil's ill-fated Copa America Centenario campaign with the same injury, and after being assessed by medical staff in Bavaria it was confirmed he will be unable to travel home to compete for gold between Aug. 5-21.

The 25-year-old enjoyed a sensational debut season at Bayern Munich last term, his exploits down the left flank earning nine assists, four goals, and plenty of plaudits from across the globe.

Costa hasn't taken to the pitch for his country since March 25, when he scored within a minute of a 2018 World Cup qualifier against Uruguay in Recife. His lack of availability could ensure Philippe Coutinho's selection into the Rio 2016 squad goes relatively untroubled.
