Cristiano Ronaldo probably can't feel the pain in his knee right now. His mind is elsewhere.

The Portuguese captain, overcome with emotion when he was forced to leave the Euro 2016 final with a knee injury in the opening half, was in tears once again at the final whistle - this time, though, the deluge flowing from his eyeballs came from a place of jubilation.

Portugal, thanks to a goal from Eder in the 109th minute, hoisted the Henri Delaunay Cup for the first time in the nation's tortured footballing history, defeating host country France 1-0 in extra time.

"I'm so happy. This is something I have wanted for a long time now, ever since 2004," the Selecao captain said after the match, referring to Portugal's loss on home soil in the Euro 2004 final to Greece.

"The Portuguese people deserve this; our players deserve this. Unfortunately, things didn't go well for me but I've always believed in these players. They have quality and ability.

"This is one of the happiest moments in my career. I've always said I wanted to win a trophy with the national team and make history. I'd like to thank my team-mates, our coach, our wider team at this Euro, and the Portuguese people cheering us on. This is a unique moment for me. It's unforgettable."
