Ahead of a Premier League return after a seven-year hiatus in the second tier, Middlesbrough is reportedly looking to add a veteran influence to its attack force, with the club in discussions with Fenerbahce striker Robin van Persie.

Van Persie, 32, is under contract with the Istanbul giant through 2018, though reports suggest that the player who scored 20 times in 45 appearances for the Super Lig runner-up kicked off discussions with the North Yorkshire side on Wednesday, according to Peter O'Rourke of ESPN FC.

An already busy summer for Aitor Karanka's lot has seen the club bolster its ranks with three new players. Viktor Fischer, Marten de Roon, and Bernardo Espinosa have all been lured to the Riverside, and there's talk that van Persie and former Barcelona shot-stopper Victor Valdes could be next.

While looking to bolster the ranks with summer signings, Karanka concedes that he wants to give the players who assisted in promotion a chance to establish themselves in the top flight.

"Now we have two or three weeks to sign new players, but we are in the Premier League thanks to the players that were here so it's a good few weeks for them to convince me," Karanka offered ahead of Boro's pre-season training.

Middlesbrough boasts a three-prong attack featuring Cristhian Stuani, David Nugent, and Jordan Rhodes, which is a relatively decent trio compared to what most promoted sides are equipped with.

If Middlesbrough has had a busy transfer window, Fenerbahce's has been utterly engaged. Established internationals Nani, Gokhan Gonul, Bruno Alves, and Caner Erkin have all made their exit, while Gregory van der Wiel and Roman Neustadter have been recruited to the Ulker Stadium.
