Panthers' Coleman not focusing on contract negotiations

Kurt Coleman was among the best bargains in the NFL last season, making seven interceptions on a $750,000 salary.

He would like to see his production rewarded, but the Carolina Panthers safety isn't holding his breath on a new deal.

"I respect everyone that’s involved in the process and I’m trusting that both sides are going to do what’s right and what’s fair," Coleman told Joseph Person of the Charlotte Observer about his contract status.

The Panthers are also in negotiations with defensive tackle Kawann Short, who is expected to receive a new contract of much larger proportions. General manager David Gettleman hasn't given out many big contracts to defensive backs, so Coleman is staying focused on his job and letting his agents do theirs.

"Honestly, it’s out of my hands. My job isn’t to negotiate. I probably wouldn’t be that good at it. My personal feelings might get (involved)," said Coleman. "I just control what I can control."

Coleman will likely see even more playing time this year with the departure of Roman Harper in free agency. The 28-year-old safety's current contract is set to expire following the 2016 season.
