Report: Friction among coaching staff impaired England's tournament

The partnership between ex-England manager Roy Hodgson and former assistant Gary Neville at Euro 2016 has come under scrutiny following the country's embarrassing elimination at the hands of Iceland last Monday.

While the players bonded well at the team's base in Chantilly, the same can't be said about the coaching staff, whose fractious relationship ultimately became detrimental to England's performance, reports The Guardian's Daniel Taylor.

"The players got on fine," a source told the Guardian. "It was the coaches who fell out."

The players apparently complained of receiving mixed messages from the coaches, and one player reportedly turned to the bench during the Iceland loss to ask where a teammate was supposed to be playing.

Neville and Hodgson disagreed over training methods, among other things, and Neville found an ally in goalkeeping coach Dave Watson.

Meanwhile, the Football Association was apparently concerned enough about player behaviour to encourage the £500-a-night Auberge du Jeu de Paume hotel, where the team was staying, to take down its chandeliers in case they were damaged, according to hotel staff.

The fallout from what's widely considered England's most embarrassing exit from a major tournament has been significant, and has allegedly encouraged the FA to revise how the hierarchy and backroom staff operate at St George's Park in Staffordshire.

Hodgson stepped down as manager following the Iceland game, and finding a successor for the veteran appears trickier than some would've envisaged. Under-21 boss Gareth Southgate has already pulled himself out of the running, along with Crystal Palace gaffer Alan Pardew.

England returns to competitive action on Sept. 4 with a 2018 World Cup qualifier against Slovakia at the Stadion Antona Malatinskeho.
