Vicente del Bosque resigns as manager of Spain

Madrid - Vicente del Bosque said Thursday he has resigned as manager of Spain, just days after the reigning European champion crashed out of Euro 2016 with a Round of 16 loss to Italy.

"Without a doubt, I have no intention to remain as coach, but you have to be discreet. No matter what the result of the Euros, I had no doubt about what my future would be," he told Spanish public radio RNE, confirming reports in sports dailies AS and Marca that he had quit.

Del Bosque, 65, guided Spain to wins at the 2010 FIFA World Cup and at Euro 2012, but then oversaw the team's shock group-stage exit at the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil.

He assumed the national team job after stints with Real Madrid and Besiktas, winning two European Cups, two Spanish league crowns, one European Super Cup and a Club World Cup title during four years in charge in the Spanish capital.
