Kipnis, Napoli create makeshift 'Jobu' shrine in Indians' locker room

All it takes is two figurines, three mini bottles of Bacardi rum, and some luck for the Cleveland Indians to turn things around.

That's exactly what Jason Kipnis and Mike Napoli have done in the locker room by adding a makeshift "Jobu" voodoo doll from the 1989 movie "Major League" to their pregame rituals. A quote from character Pedro Cerrano is also hanging in their lockers.

"Major League" was about an Indians owner who hated Cleveland so much, she did everything in her power to assemble the worst group of players to lose as many games as possible so the club could move to Miami.

Cerrano, a power hitter, used Jobu in an effort to turn his luck around with hitting the curveball. The only catch was no other player was allowed to mess with his doll.

"It's very bad to drink Jobu's rum," Cerrano said in the movie. "It's very bad."

Things aren't as bad with the real-life Indians, but it doesn't hurt to try something new.

"We've had Jobu there for a little bit," Kipnis told reporters after Tuesday's 6-0 win over the Tampa Bay Rays. "He's been working. He didn't like the first airport vodka we left him. So we tried Bacardi (rum) and that seems to be working.

"Right now it's working so we're not going to mess with what works."

After winning their first six games in June, the Indians notched only three wins in their next nine games. It's unclear when Jobu made an appearance, but Cleveland is rolling with five straight wins under its belt.

On Tuesday, Napoli had two hits, one walk, and one run scored, while Kipnis had one hit, one RBI, one run scored, and one walk.
