Fantasy Fallout: Martin Prado a Perfect Replacement for Matt Duffy

Here are the fantasy implications of San Francisco Giants 2B/3B Matt Duffy landing on the 15-day disabled list with an Achilles' injury:

Season-Long Fantasy Leagues

Duffy was off to a disappointing start to 2016, following up a very promising 2015 season with the Giants. He had stolen eight bases, after stealing 12 bags a year ago, but his four home runs were down in pace from his 12 last year, while his .253 batting average was done 40 points from last year's breakout campaign.

He's owned in 50 percent of leagues, but he's now droppable in anything other than deeper mixed leagues or NL-Only leagues, unless owners have an empty DL spot. He had shown little sign of promise of late, and the nature of the injury could impact his stolen base count, which had been his best contribution thus far.

The logical replacement from an eligibility standpoint is Miami Marlins 2B/3B Martin Prado. He's slashing .324/.368/.417. Though he hasn't stolen a base and has just one home run, he has scored 31 runs and driven in 22 RBIs. He's available in over 40 percent of standard leagues, and can slot right into either premium position now vacated by Duffy.

The Giants in-house replacement is 3B Conor Gillaspie, but he's hitting just .159 through 44 at-bats and can't be considered as an option in anything other than a deep NL-Only league.

Waiver Wire Targets

Here are the best replacements if Prado is unavailable in your league:

  • 1B Logan Morrison, Tampa Bay Rays: Though he's not eligible at either of Duffy's positions, Morrison can fill a utility spot on a fantasy team with another option at either second or third. He has seven home runs and two stolen bases in the past 30 days, and his walk rate is his highest since 62 games in the 2010 season, while with the Marlins.
  • INF/OF Howie Kendrick, Los Angeles Dodgers: The nearly 33-year-old Kendrick is among the league leaders in stolen bases over the past month, totaling five steals in just 74 at-bats. While he doesn't play every day, he does play all but two fantasy positions. He also has three homers in the past month and has hit a steady .270.
  • SS Christian Arroyo, Giants: Only a speculative option in NL-Only or the deepest of mixed leagues, the Giants' top infield prospect could be an option to replace Duffy. He's likely superior to Gillaspie, after slashing .285/.330/.397 through 267 plate appearances at Double-A. He hit two home runs but was yet to attempt a steal.
