Fantasy Fallout: With Peralta Hurt, Look Outside of Arizona For a Replacement

Mark J. Rebilas-USA TODAY Sports

Here are the fantasy implications following the Arizona Diamondbacks placing OF David Peralta back on the 15-day disabled list and recalling OF Socrates Brito from Triple-A:

Season-Long Fantasy

Since returning to action after missing close to a month, Peralta played in eight games prior to missing the weekend set with the Philadelphia Phillies. He hit a home run in his first game back, but has otherwise been unspectacular as a fantasy option.

His ownership has dipped considerably, though he should be stashed if there is an available DL slot. Peralta slashed .312/.371/.522 with 17 home runs and nine stolen bases in 2015 and while the injury bug has bitten him this season, it doesn't mean he should be on waivers with this much regularity.

His replacement, Brito, is hardly owned outside of NL-only or deep mixed leagues. He's worth keeping an eye on should he stick with the club even though his first, 10-game run this season wasn't remarkable. At Triple-A, Brito has slashed .289/.310/.450 with five home runs and three stolen bases. The steals seem low considering it was a big part of his game in previous seasons.

Brito is not reliable enough in terms of results but also, more importantly, playing time. While Arizona is in need of more lefty bats, there are a lot of outfield-eligible players on this roster who will compete for playing time. It could also spell diminishing value for 3B/OF Yasmany Tomas, who could cede a few games to Brito in addition to Rickie Weeks, Michael Bourn and Peter O'Brien.

Waiver Wire Targets

Instead of placing too much trust in the Diamondbacks outfield in Peralta's absence, it might be wise to look elsewhere if you're one of the 50 percent who has held onto him.

  • OF Rajai Davis, Indians: Steals are hard to come by and yet Davis is still available in more than half of all leagues. He has 20 stolen bases and a surprising seven home runs - one shy from of his career high. He went 4-for-5 with a pair of runs and two steals in Sunday's win over the White Sox.
  • UTIL Alex Rodriguez, Yankees: It hasn't been great, but Rodriguez isn't a bad flier to take in Peralta's absence. If he continues to stumble, he's an easy drop later. If his slight four-game hit streak is a sign of things to come, however, he could be a huge steal, especially if the power comes back. Only do so with high average options already on the roster.
  • OF Chris Young, Red Sox: With the demotion of OF Rusney Castillo, Young's already burgeoning playing time should continue to be assured. His low ownership suggests a relative amount of being gun-shy because of his long-term struggles at the big league level. His .291 batting average and six home runs make him an interesting flier in an elite lineup.
