Report: Joey Bosa skipping Chargers minicamp amid contract dispute

The San Diego Chargers' first-round pick from this year's draft, defensive end Joey Bosa, is skipping the team's mandatory three-day minicamp amid a stalemate in negotiations for his rookie contract, sources told Michael Gehlken of The San Diego Union-Tribune.

The issue is that Bosa's representation is seeking a contract that doesn't include any offset language, a standard inclusion in most rookie deals, notes Gehlken.

If the contract contains no offset language, San Diego would be required to pay Bosa all of the guaranteed money in his four-year contract if they parted ways, even if he was signed by another team. If it did contain offset language, the Chargers would only be on the hook for the difference between his old and new salaries if he was released and picked up by another team.

The 20-year-old has attended nearly all of the Chargers' offseason program since being drafted with the third overall pick, but was advised to stay away from minicamp sessions, which start Tuesday.

The issue in negotiations for rookies taken at the top of the first round is fairly common, but it means Bosa will miss valuable preparation time for his first year in the league.
