MMA star Kimbo Slice dies at 42
Kimbo Slice died Monday at the age of 42. The cause of his death wasn't revealed.
Bellator CEO Scott Coker confirmed Slice's death in a statement:
We are all shocked and saddened by the devastating and untimely loss of Kimbo Slice, a beloved member of the Bellator family. One of the most popular MMA fighters ever, Kimbo was a charismatic, larger-than-life personality that transcended the sport.
Outside of the cage he was a friendly, gentle giant, and a devoted family man. HIs loss leaves us all with extremely heavy hearts, and our thoughts and prayers are with the entire Ferguson family and all of Kimbo's friends, fans, and teammates.
Born as Kevin Ferguson, Slice last fought against Dhafir Harris in February, originally winning via technical knockout. However, the decision was changed to a no contest after Slice tested positive for the anabolic steroid nandrolone, and was found with an elevated testosterone-to-epitestosterone ratio.
Known for his contributions to the UFC and Bellator, Slice first gained notoriety for his street fighting displays that were widely distributed on YouTube.
The heavyweight fighter gained traction after defeating former UFC star Tank Abbott in 48 seconds in February 2008. Slice became an integral part of the sport's history after defeating James Thompson later that year in the main event of "EliteXC: Primetime." It was the first mixed martial arts card to be carried on a major American television network during prime time.
Prior to his death, Slice was slated to fight Thompson in the main event of the Bellator 158 card on July 16.
Many members of the mixed martial arts community mourned Slice's death Monday night:
