San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick has been present all throughout his team's offseason workouts, despite his lack of medical clearance.

The Niners will open their mandatory minicamp this week, and Kaepernick will keep doing what he's been doing.

Kaepernick won't be cleared to participate in the minicamp, according to the NFL Network's Ian Rapoport. The Niners are hoping he'll be ready closer to training camp.

Kaepernick will continue to watch and take mental reps at 49ers practices.

Once he's been cleared, Kaepernick is expected to compete with Blaine Gabbert for the team's starting quarterback position. Head coach Chip Kelly has been adamant that his medical status hasn't put him behind Gabbert in the competition, but a lack of experience practicing in Kelly's new offense will certainly hinder his chances.
