Absentee XI: Best players not at the Copa America

The Copa America Centenario is set to kick off Friday, with the United States taking on Colombia at Levi's Stadium in Santa Clara, and there will be plenty of star power on offer throughout the month of June as this 100th anniversary special plays out across the country.

While some countries, like Brazil and Argentina, boast an incredible number of talented players in multiple positions, each nation is limited to its 23-man rosters, leaving quite a few notable stars absent from this tournament.

Here's a look at a starting XI of the most glaring omissions:

The selection is largely made up of Brazilian and Argentine players, as expected, with three of the back four comprised of players Dunga decided not to take to the Copa America.

He had good reason, too; David Luiz and Marcelo were part of the Brazil team that infamously lost 7-1 to eventual winners Germany in the 2014 FIFA World Cup, and were entirely suspect on six of those seven goals.

Argentina's wealth of attacking options often makes the Albiceleste too top-heavy or forces quality players to miss out on starting roles; Gonzalo Higuain had a blistering year for Napoli and is expected to come off the bench. That leaves Juventus ace Paulo Dybala out of the squad entirely.

Real Madrid goalkeeper Keylor Navas of Costa Rica was left out after an unfortunately timed injury ruled him out of the tournament, as was Ecuador forward Felipe Caicedo who is dealing with a femur issue.

Fredy Guarin was left out of the team, presumably due to his move to the Chinese Super League, but had he stayed at Inter Milan, it seems unlikely he would not be starting for Colombia.
