Former Philadelphia Eagles and Seattle Seahawks defensive back Walter Thurmond will retire from the NFL at 28, following six seasons in the league, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter.

Thurmond spent the first four seasons of his career with the Seahawks, featuring in the team's vaunted secondary nicknamed the "Legion of Boom." In 2013, Thurmond helped the Seahawks to their first Super Bowl in franchise history.

Last season, Thurmond recorded 71 tackles, three interceptions, two sacks, and two forced fumbles in all 16 games with the Eagles.

The timing of Thurmond's retirement is somewhat curious, considering that he's coming off the best season of his career. However, Thurmond reportedly told friends that he wants to pursue other avenues, per ESPN.
