Baylor's latest coaching moves only add to confusion

Jason O. Watson / US PRESSWIRE

We may never know how far around the globe Baylor searched to find an interim head coach, but it's hard to believe the best the program could do was Jim Grobe.

The former Wake Forest coach may fit perfectly at Baylor if the school is trying to convince the public it cares more about campus life than football games, but that's partly because his track record on the field leaves plenty to be desired.

In 13 years at Wake Forest, Grobe's Demon Deacons posted only one season with double-digit wins, and just four with a winning record. In fact, the Deacons didn't record a winning season in any of Grobe's five final campaigns, which helps explain why he was available for hire.

Furthermore, Grobe has no previous ties to Baylor or the Texas area and will be hard-pressed to convince Art Briles' former recruits to stay, or get new ones to commit for 2017.

The Grobe hiring is curious enough, and then there's Phil Bennett's standing with the program.

The Bears defensive coordinator and former SMU head coach was widely reported to be in line for the interim gig almost the moment Briles was canned. It's possible he turned down the job, but it appears more likely that Baylor decided he wasn't fit to lead the program. Then why do they consider him fit to remain on the staff?

If Bennett participated in the mishandling of sexual assault allegations that Baylor concluded Briles was involved in following an outside review, he should be fired. For what it's worth, Bennett seemed to have no problem welcoming Sam Ukwuachu back to the program last year as he was facing sexual assault charges. The defensive end was eventually convicted.

If Baylor believes Bennett acted responsibly through all this mess, however, it's hard to figure out why the Bears would go away from him for the interim job, given his experience with the team and as a head coach.

Bennett isn't the only coach staying. Baylor reportedly plans to keep the bulk of its staff intact, essentially scapegoating Briles and exonerating everyone else implicated.

One of the coaches staying on is Kendal Briles, Art's son, and the awkwardness when he resumes his duties as offensive coordinator will be through the roof.

To top it all off, the man who'll be credited with hiring Grobe (whether it was his decision or not), Ian McCaw, resigned as athletic director about three hours after the Grobe news broke.

Just another day in Waco, it seems.
