Fantasy Fallout: Peter O'Brien's Re-Call Injects Offense into NL-Only Leagues
Here are the fantasy implications of the Arizona Diamondbacks promoting OF/1B Peter O'Brien to the major leagues:
Season-Long Fantasy Leagues
O'Brien has proven his worth at Triple-A this season, slashing .306/.330/.601 with 12 home runs, 31 runs, 32 RBIs and one stolen base. The negatives are his lofty 29.7% strikeout rate and minuscule 3.3% walk rate. He appeared in eight MLB games in 2015, hitting one home run in his 12 plate appearances.
He's been a high-average, high-power hitter through the minor leagues, despite an always-elevated K%. He's only stolen two total bases across his minor league career.
His immediate playing time is likely to come in the outfield, but he has some experience playing catcher and first base as well. With the Diamondbacks having received near-stellar play from catchers Welington Castillo and Chris Herrmann, and with Paul Goldschmidt offering few openings at first, he's likely to find his playing time in center field, replacing OF Chris Owings.
Even in the outfield, his time may be brief. OF David Peralta (wrist) is likely to appear in an extended spring training game Wednesday and could return to the Diamondbacks by next weekend.
The speculative playing time makes him difficult to add even in deep mixed leagues, but the minimum of a full week at the MLB level and his raw power upside make him a must add in all NL-only formats.
