RECAP: Rookie Alexander Rossi wins the Indianapolis 500

FINISH - Rossi - a rookie - stunned the field to win the Indianapolis 500!

Lap 197 - Castroneves and Bourdais head to pit lane, while Rossi keeps the lead with Munoz and Newgarden charging.

Lap 194 - Newgarden and Hinchcliffe head to pit lane while Munoz remains on the track for one extra lap. Rossi remains on the track and takes the lead.

Lap 190 - Carlos Munoz continues to roll, and takes the lead with 10 laps remaining. Many drivers are hoping for a caution to refuel.

Lap 185 - Munoz leaps to second position with Newgarden in the lead. 2011 second-place finisher J.R. Hildebrand forced to pit while sitting in the top five.

Lap 177 - No changes among leaders, as Kanaan eyes his second Indianapolis 500 victory after winning in 2013.

Lap 167 - Tony Kanaan retakes the lead out of the restart with Hildebrand, Newgarden and Hinchcliffe behind him. Ryan Hunter-Reay, meanwhile, has been unable to recover after his pit lane collision with Townsend Bell.

Lap 163 - Takuma Sato collides with wall to bring out the yellow flag once again. Helio Castroneves, meanwhile, was thankful for the caution flag as he was able to head to pit road to repair a broken rear pod after a minor collision with Hildebrand.
