The Memphis Grizzlies appear to be close to landing their new head coach just a week and a half after relieving Dave Joerger of his duties.

Following an interview, talks between the Grizzlies and San Antonio Spurs assistant James Borrego have "gained steam," ESPN's Marc Stein reports.

Borrego has spent close to seven seasons as an assistant coach, working with the New Orleans Hornets, Orlando Magic, and Spurs. He also served as the Magic's interim coach following Jacque Vaughn's dismissal in 2014-15, but wasn't offered a contract after compiling a 10-20 record.

Borrego joins ex-Indiana Pacers head coach Frank Vogel, Charlotte Hornets assistant coach Patrick Ewing, Spurs assistant coach Ettore Messina, Miami Heat assistant coach David Fizdale, and Portland Trail Blazers assistant coach Nate Tibbetts on the reported list of candidates Memphis has interviewed for the position.
