White Sox GM eyeing October, ready to make 'big move'

The Chicago White Sox have surged to a surprising 24-14 start this season, and their front office wants to strike while the iron's hot.

General manager Rick Hahn said Tuesday he's ready to pull the trigger on a big move to help propel the club towards the playoffs, if something becomes available.

"We are prepared to make a big move today if it presents itself," Hahn told reporters. "Unfortunately, our timing might not line up with the other 29 clubs just yet."

Despite his aggressiveness and readiness to make something happen, Hahn doesn't appear to have a willing dance partner just yet.

"It's still early in the process," he explained. "A lot of clubs don't look to make those moves until June or July but we are having dialogue right now hoping something comes together more quickly than that."

What exactly that big move could be remains to be seen, but it's clear Hahn senses he's got a team poised to make a run. The White Sox starting pitching has been lights-out, led by Chris Sale and Jose Quintana's sub-2.00 ERAs, and the bullpen has been excellent as well. While the bats haven't been awful - newcomers Todd Frazier and Brett Lawrie have put up solid numbers early on - there's certainly room for improvement in that area.

Another question would be who the team could give up for a midseason acquisition that would make an impact. Chicago's farm system was ranked 20th by Baseball Prospectus at the beginning of the season, and lacks depth beyond two top prospects.

Hahn hinted that he might be willing to dip into that shallow pool if it meant bringing October baseball back to the South Side for the first time since 2008.

"We want to put ourselves in the best position to win in October," he said. "First to get to October and then to win deep in October."
