The IOC says as many as 31 athletes across six sports could be banned from competing at the Olympic Games in Rio after retesting their doping samples from the Beijing Olympics in 2008.

The IOC retested 454 samples from Beijing using the latest methods, with a focus on athletes who could potentially compete in Rio.

250 more results from retesting of samples from the London Olympics in 2012 are expected shortly.

The IOC also promised "swift and decisive action" following allegations that Russian anti-doping insiders conspired to execute a state-run doping program at the Sochi Olympics in 2014.
