5 biggest snubs from England's provisional Euro 2016 team

It doesn't matter if it's a provisional squad for a friendly or the final team selection ahead of a major tournament, international squads never fail to leave pockets of supporters raging at the manager's decisions.

Perhaps that trend began with England as the country can seemingly never get it right, according to their fans.

With the announcement of Roy Hodgson's 26-man squad ahead of England's friendlies against Turkey, Australia, and Portugal before he narrows his team down to 23 for the Euros in France next month, here's a look at five players who might feel hard done by:

Theo Walcott, Arsenal - 43 caps

While he may "respect" Hodgson's decision to leave him out of the Euros this summer, his exclusion will undoubtedly cause Theo Walcott to reassess several factors that led to the disappointing news.

His first priority may be to re-evaluate where he stands at Arsenal following a disappointing year where he, despite being relatively fit, struggled to earn regular playing time under manager Arsene Wenger.

But Hodgson's assessment that Walcott's lack of playing time is a curious conclusion considering the likes of teammate Jack Wilshere, Andros Townsend, and Fabian Delph have played less than the 27-year-old winger during the Premier League season.

Andy Carroll, West Ham - 9

The final months of the season inspired hope that Andy Carroll might have a chance to reclaim his place in the English squad after positive contributions down the stretch helped West Ham win a place in Europe.

Unfortunately, the once-promising forward will miss yet another major tournament. But the decision doesn't seem to be personal after the emergence of a handful of capable forwards who have pushed Carroll down the pecking order. With the likes of Harry Kane, Jamie Vardy, and Marcus Rashford rising through the ranks, perhaps the need for an aerial threat will one day see Carroll win a spot with the Three Lions when World Cup qualifying begins in September.

Jermain Defoe, Sunderland - 55

Sunderland fans were likely baffled by the collection of English forwards and saw that Jermain Defoe's spectacular season went unrewarded by Hodgson.

Like Carroll, Defoe is a victim of the time. At 33, Defoe's promising season, which helped Sunderland avoid relegation, may have been overshadowed by his advanced age during an era with an abundance of attacking talent.

Mark Noble, West Ham - 0

Mark Noble can't catch a break on the international stage. The West Ham captain will have to wait to win his first English cap after Hodgson ruled him out of the provisional squad.

The decision comes after another solid season in London's east end where Noble may not have grabbed headlines like teammate Dimitri Payet, but certainly played a bigger role on his team than, say, Fabian Delph or Jack Wilshere.

Aaron Cresswell, West Ham - 0

At this point, West Ham supporters can be forgiven if they're feeling slighted as England travels to France in June without an Iron in the squad.

With age and emerging talent seemingly squeezing Carroll and Noble out of a spot on the team, one has to wonder what reason Hodgson has for excluding young defender Aaron Cresswell.

The 26-year-old was a regular fixture in Slaven Bilic's side - starting all but one of West Ham's matches this season - yet the two left-back positions will go to Ryan Bertrand and Danny Rose, as Cresswell's offensive threat was obviously not considered worthy of a place on the team.
