Bears DC Fangio unconcerned about Leonard Floyd's weight

The Chicago Bears traded up to the ninth overall pick to ensure they'd get linebacker Leonard Floyd, but their selection was followed by questions about how he'd fit into their scheme.

The Bears' 3-4 defense means Floyd will be asked to play outside linebacker, but his relative lack of size at 6-foot-4 and 244 pounds (as listed on the team's official rookie minicamp roster) means he could struggle in run defense and keeping containment against much bigger offensive lineman.

However, defensive coordinator Vic Fangio is unconcerned with Floyd's playing weight, saying Saturday that the 23-year-old will likely even take the field at a lower weight than he's listed at.

"The weight thing's not a big thing with me," Fangio said, according to Jeff Dickerson of ESPN. "He's going to weigh somewhere between 230 and 235. That's just what he's going to weigh. We knew that before we drafted him. So it's not an issue. We knew that and that's a fact and that's what he is.”

Vangio said the Bears are willing to sacrifice a few plays where Floyd's unable to make an impact, for hopefully the many he'll be able to make that no other player on the roster could.

"I'm sure there’s going to be a play or two every game where you’re going to say, 'Jeez, he's not heavy enough' or 'He’s too light.' Hopefully there'll be a few plays every game, too, that we say, 'Well, jeez, we didn't have anybody who could have done that in the past.' He is what he is."
