2016 MLS Power Rankings: Week 10

Eighteen teams squared off in Week 10 of the 2016 MLS season and there was plenty of drama across the board as players clashed against one another, and (in the Columbus Crew's case) with their own teammates.

Indeed, it was the heated exchange between Crew captain Federico Higuain and top striker Kei Kamara that highlighted the week that was in MLS, the two fighting over a penalty kick and the latter expressing his anguish at losing out on a hat-trick by lambasting the former post-game.

Here's how each team ranks this week:

1. LA Galaxy (-)

Record (W-L-D) Goals For Goals Against
5-1-3 22 10
  • Last Week: 4-2 win vs. New England Revolution
  • Next MLS Match: Wednesday, May 11 at Philadelphia (7 p.m. ET)

The LA Galaxy were already a scary and dangerous team heading into this week, then the team welcomed back Robbie Keane to the fold. The Irishman, of course, found the back of the net and the rest of MLS is now trembling.

2. Toronto FC (+1)

  • Last Week: 1-0 win vs. FC Dallas
  • Next MLS Match: Saturday, May 14 vs. Vancouver (7:30 p.m. ET)
Record (W-L-D) Goals For Goals Against
4-3-2 10 7

Home at last in front of 30,000 boisterous supporters at the newly renovated BMO Field, the Reds mounted an incredible display of control and dominance against FC Dallas. Michael Bradley was huge on the day, as well.

3. Real Salt Lake (-1)

  • Last Week: 1-0 loss vs. Colorado Rapids
  • Next MLS Match: Saturday, May 14 at Houston (8:30 p.m. ET)
Record (W-L-D) Goals For Goals Against
5-2-2 14 13

A bit of a stumble this week for RSL as the surging side succumbed to a 1-0 loss in the Rocky Mountain Cup to an equally in-form Colorado Rapids team. Shouldn't be too much cause for concern, though.

4. Montreal Impact (+1)

  • Last Week: 4-4 draw vs. Columbus Crew
  • Next MLS Match: Saturday, May 14 vs. Philadelphia (5 p.m. ET)
Record (W-L-D) Goals For Goals Against
4-3-3 17 15

Montreal pulled off an incredible come-from-behind draw against the hapless Columbus Crew, with Dominic Oduro scoring in added time to secure a point for his side. The positive result was also aided by some in-fighting among the Crew ranks.

5. Colorado Rapids (+4)

  • Last Week: 1-0 win vs. Real Salt Lake
  • Next MLS Match: Wednesday, May 11 vs. Sporting KC (9:00 p.m. ET)
Record (W-L-D) Goals For Goals Against
6-2-2 13 8

We can't deny it any longer; the Colorado Rapids are back in business and cannot be taken lightly this season. Inexplicably, Pablo Mastroeni's side has become a force to be reckoned with as they sit pretty atop the entire league.

6. Philadelphia Union (-)

  • Last Week: Bye week
  • Next MLS Match: Wednesday, May 11 vs. LA Galaxy (7:00 p.m. ET)
Record (W-L-D) Goals For Goals Against
4-3-1 11 8

If given the choice of a bye week or another match, this in-form team would probably have opted to play this week:

7. FC Dallas (-3)

  • Last Week: 1-0 loss vs. Toronto FC
  • Next MLS Match: Wednesday, May 11 vs. Portland (9:00 p.m. ET)
Record (W-L-D) Goals For Goals Against
5-4-2 15 18

It's incredible how different FC Dallas looks without Matt Hedges in the back four; they'll be hoping the injured defender makes his return sooner rather than later because the Hoops are struggling without him.

8. San Jose Earthquakes (-1)

  • Last Week: 2-0 loss vs. Seattle Sounders
  • Next MLS Match: Wednesday, May 11 vs. Houston (10:30 p.m. ET)
Record (W-L-D) Goals For Goals Against
4-3-3 12 13

Not a fun week for the Quakes, who succumbed to the Sounders as young rookie hotshot Jordan Morris scored his fourth consecutive goal. Houston's up next, though, which is a perfect hunting ground for Chris Wondolowski and company.

9. Vancouver Whitecaps (+4)

  • Last Week: 2-1 win vs. Portland Timbers
  • Next MLS Match: Wednesday, May 11 vs. Chicago (10:00 p.m. ET)
Record (W-L-D) Goals For Goals Against
4-5-2 14 16

The Whitecaps showed a glimpse of last year's impressive form in brushing aside Cascadia rivals Portland last Saturday, with Masato Kudo scoring and assisting to deliver the 2-1 win.

10. Portland Timbers (-)

  • Last Week: 2-1 loss vs. Vancouver Whitecaps
  • Next MLS Match: Wednesday, May 11 at Dallas (9:00 p.m. ET)
Record (W-L-D) Goals For Goals Against
3-4-3 15 18

The MLS Cup hangover has to be shaken eventually, surely, or the Timbers will soon slip past mid-table form to bottom-of-the-pack obscurity.

11. Seattle Sounders (+5)

  • Last Week: 2-0 win vs. San Jose Earthquakes
  • Next MLS Match: Saturday, May 14 at Dallas (9:00 p.m. ET)
Record (W-L-D) Goals For Goals Against
4-4-1 10 10

The Sounders needed a hero in the early goings of the season and it looks like Morris might just be their man; the young U.S. forward has propelled his team to yet another positive result.

12. New York Red Bulls (-1)

  • Last Week: 1-1 draw vs. Orlando City
  • Next MLS Match: Friday, May 12 at D.C. United (7:00 p.m. ET)
Record (W-L-D) Goals For Goals Against
3-6-1 13 18

Well ... at least this time it was only a draw. The Red Bulls still don't look convincing and while a point is a point, it's just not good enough for last year's Supporters' Shield winners.

13. Sporting Kansas City (-5)

  • Last Week: 2-0 loss vs. Houston Dynamo
  • Next MLS Match: Wednesday, May 11 at Colorado (9:00 p.m. ET)
Record (W-L-D) Goals For Goals Against
4-5-2 11 12

Whoops - what the heck happened to Sporting KC? Peter Vermes' team was billed as one of the best this season but Dom Dwyer and co. haven't won a game in their last six attempts ... talk about a slump.

14. Orlando City (-2)

  • Last Week: 1-1 draw vs. New York Red Bulls
  • Next MLS Match: Sunday, May 15 at Sporting KC (3:30 p.m. ET)
Record (W-L-D) Goals For Goals Against
2-2-5 16 14

Eventually, Orlando will pick up as Kaka returns to form and full fitness but now is, evidently, not that time. A penalty call not given didn't help this week either.

15. New York City FC (+3)

  • Last Week: 2-0 win vs. D.C. United
  • Next MLS Match: Sunday, May 15 at Portland (7:30 p.m. ET)
Record (W-L-D) Goals For Goals Against
3-3-4 15 15

There's signs of life at Yankee Stadium and signs, perhaps, that Patrick Vieira's vision is starting to take shape with the NYCFC core, which doesn't include Frank Lampard, who's off to cover Euro 2016 with BBC Sport.

16. Columbus Crew (-2)

  • Last Week: 4-4 draw vs. Montreal Impact
  • Next MLS Match: Saturday, May 14 vs. Colorado (7:30 p.m. ET)
Record (W-L-D) Goals For Goals Against
2-4-3 11 14

Gregg Berhalter has more than just tactical adjustments to work on this week in training; he'll need to try to mend the relationships between his star players, too. It's not a good problem to have.

17. Houston Dynamo (+3)

  • Last Week: 2-0 win vs. Sporting Kansas City
  • Next MLS Match: Wednesday, May 11 at San Jose (10:30 p.m. ET)
Record (W-L-D) Goals For Goals Against
2-5-2 16 16

Houston is a tricky team to figure out because for all their faults, this side still knows how to score goals. A 2-0 win over Sporting KC was just what the doctor ordered but how the Dynamo respond next week will shape its season.

18. D.C. United (-1)

  • Last Week: 2-0 loss vs. New York City FC
  • Next MLS Match: Friday, May 13 vs. NY Red Bulls (7:00 p.m. ET)
Record (W-L-D) Goals For Goals Against
2-4-4 11 13

Over the last two years, D.C. United became the example of how a franchise can rise from the ashes and become great again. Funny, that.

19. Chicago Fire (-)

  • Last Week: Bye Week
  • Next MLS Match: Wednesday, May 11 at Vancouver (10:00 p.m. ET)
Record (W-L-D) Goals For Goals Against
1-2-4 7 8

A bye week came just in time for the Chicago Fire, who needed a chance to regroup and refocus after a less-than-stellar start to the season.

20. New England Revolution (-5)

  • Last Week: 4-2 loss vs. LA Galaxy
  • Next MLS Match: Saturday, May 14 vs. Chicago (7:30 p.m. ET)
Record (W-L-D) Goals For Goals Against
1-3-7 13 20

This one may be a bit surprising but the Revs needed a win against the LA Galaxy and predictably didn't find it. Frankly, seven draws in 11 games is not as commendable as the team would have you believe, more a sign of incompetency than anything else. The Revs need a change, and fast.
