Terry may have played last game with Chelsea after red card vs. Sunderland

John Terry's season - and perhaps his career - with Chelsea is all but over as he's set to face a two-match suspension for his second dismissal of the Premier League campaign Saturday at Sunderland.

The Chelsea captain, who only recently returned from injury, earned a second yellow card for committing a late foul on Sunderland midfielder Wahbi Khazri.

The sending-off is worth a one-game ban, but Terry will sit out an additional match because it's the second time he's forced a red card from the referee's book this season. The first incident came versus West Brom in August.

"It's sad he was sent off for a second yellow," interim manager Guus Hiddink told reporters afterward. "I think the referee was too close to the incident. Normally we say the ref should be close to what can happen but I think he was too close and he had an impulsive reaction to draw the yellow card."

FA rules stipulate that "players dismissed from the Field of Play for a second time in the same season, in addition to the automatic suspension applicable to the offence, will be suspended one extra match."

Terry will therefore miss Chelsea's away fixture Wednesday at Liverpool and the finale at home to newly crowned champion Leicester City.

He's expected to leave the club after reaching an impasse over a potential contract extension. His current deal expires in June, although incoming Chelsea manager Antonio Conte could elect to keep the 35-year-old defender at Stamford Bridge.

"Of course we don't know what his future is at this moment," added Hiddink. "It's sad that he won't be participating in our last game at home, the Leicester game, the champions, a party time let's say."
