United's Darmian leaves on stretcher after heavy collision

Manchester United lost its second player of the afternoon after Matteo Darmian was forced to leave Saturday's match following a collision with Norwich City defender Ivo Pinto.

Cameron Borthwick-Jackson was brought in to replace Darmian, who joins Anthony Martial on the sidelines after the French forward injured himself during warmups.

The team has yet to reveal the exact reason for his departure, but footage of the collision suggests Darmian may have injured his ankle or Achilles on the play.

Darmian sustained the knock just 13 minutes into the encounter, and received treatment on the sidelines before the decision to replace him was made by manager Louis van Gaal.

The injury could also have implications on the international stage as well, as the Italian national team will be hopeful Darmian can recover in time to play a role in its European Championship journey in France this summer.

A win Saturday could temporarily edge United closer to a Champions League spot in the table before Manchester City, who currently occupies fourth place, plays Arsenal on Sunday.
