Now that it appears Colin Kaepernick will remain with the San Francisco 49ers for the 2016 season, after all potential avenues for a trade were likely closed following the end of this year's draft, the questions about the quarterback will turn to his health.

Kaepernick took an important step in his recovery from an offseason non-throwing shoulder surgery, as he recently resumed throwing a "bit," a league source told Matt Barrows of the Sacramento Bee on Tuesday.

The 28-year-old is expected to gain full clearance by the end of May or soon after, notes Barrows.

Kaepernick also underwent surgery on the thumb of his throwing hand and his foot, but has taken part in all of the 49ers' offseason program since it started April 4.

He now faces a training camp battle for the team's starting job with Blaine Gabbert, who took over from Kaepernick when he was benched halfway through last season.

Despite an offseason of turmoil, head coach Chip Kelly said Kaepernick has been the perfect professional.

"I think he's been outstanding," Kelly said. “I think he doesn't get the credit for that. He's been here every day and worked as hard as anybody on this football team in terms of preparing for the 2016 season, and that's the way we are with him. We're moving forward."
