Atletico upsets Bayern Munich, books Champions League final berth

Bayern Munich boss Pep Guardiola will have to wait until next year to win his third Champions League title as a manager.

Antoine Griezmann played spoiler, as his 31st goal of the season in all competitions was enough for Atletico Madrid to advance to its second Champions League final in three years.

Diego Simeone's lot did just enough Tuesday at the Allianz Arena in defeat, with Griezmann's second-half finish earning the Spaniards progression courtesy of the away goals rule after the tie finished 2-2 on aggregate.

The French international straddled the offside line before he and fellow Atletico attacker Fernando Torres played a deft one-two against the run of play that left a befuddled Bavarian pairing of David Alaba and Javi Martinez flat-footed.

Griezmann's 53rd minute finish nullified a positive opening stanza from the hosts who took the lead courtesy of a deflected Xabi Alonso free-kick in the 31st minute only to have Atleti star shot-stopper Jan Oblak deny Thomas Muller a second from the spot minutes later.

An underwhelming second half for Bayern was handed a boost in the 74th minute when Robert Lewandowski headed home an Arturo Vidal pass beyond a lunging Oblak. It was the Polish international's ninth European goal in nine matches, though it wasn't enough.

Tuesday was just the fourth time that Atletico has surrendered two or more goals in all competitions this year, two of which were at the hands of Barcelona, the other a 2-1 defeat at the Vicente Calderon in the group stages against Benfica.

Atletico will now await the winner of Wednesday's second leg between Manchester City and Real Madrid, with Simeone's side seeking revenge for a loss to its capital rivals in the 2013-14 final.
