Redskins release Chris Culliver

The Washington Redskins announced Monday that they released veteran cornerback Chris Culliver.

Culliver joined the Redskins on a four-year, $32-million contract last March, but injuries forced him to miss all but six games in 2015.

After the team managed to land Josh Norman on a monster free-agent deal ahead of the draft, parting ways with Culliver immediately stood out as a possible cost-cutting move.

Washington will now move forward with Norman and Bashaud Breeland as the starters at cornerback. Among those competing for sub-package roles will be Greg Toler and third-round pick Kendall Fuller.

Culliver, 27, now becomes an unrestricted free agent. Having proven himself as a starting-caliber player during his time in San Francisco, it likely won't be long before a market for his services takes shape.

Washington also released linebacker Desmond Bishop, defensive line Christo Bilukidi, and wide receiver LaRon Byrd, and waived defensive linemen Anthony Johnson and Kamal Johnson, cornerback Al Louis-Jean, and linebacker Derrick Matthews.
