Liverpool ordered to pay Burnley up to £8M for striker Ings

A Premier League tribunal has told Liverpool to pay Burnley £6.5 million in guaranteed compensation for striker Danny Ings, with a further £1.5 million to be added if certain bonuses are achieved, according to the Premier League club.

Liverpool signed Ings from Burnley in 2015 on a free transfer, but because he was an under-23 player at the time, the Championship club felt it was entitled to remuneration for taking part in his development.

Burnley can also count on 20 percent of any profit made from any prospective transfer.

"We believe the process was conducted fairly and we respect the outcome," read a Liverpool statement. "We are pleased for Danny Ings, in particular, that this chapter is now complete and he can look forward to a long and successful career at Liverpool."

The Clarets had been pushing for a fee closer to £12 million, according to the Liverpool Echo, but the initial figure still exceeds the £3.5 million that a 2010 tribunal ordered Chelsea to pay Manchester City for striker Daniel Sturridge. Add-on clauses brought Sturridge's cost to £8.3 million.

Ings has spent the past six months recovering from a ruptured cruciate ligament, appearing in just five Premier League matches earlier this season. He suffered the season-ending in training just as manager Jurgen Klopp began his stint at the club in October.
