Real Sociedad centre-back Inigo Martinez has signed a new five-year deal with the San Sebastian club that will see the Spaniard ply his trade at the Anoeta Stadium through 2021, the club announced Tuesday.

"It is wonderful news for Real Sociedad that one of the pillars for the present and future of the team will continue with us. (Inigo) carries Real Sociedad in his heart and is a player who represents our philosophy and the team’s ambitions," club president John Aperribay said Tuesday.

Martinez, 24, joined the Basque side's first team after progressing through the youth ranks and reserve side. He has made 31 appearances in all competitions for the mid-table La Liga outfit this season.

The once-capped Spanish international appeared pleased with the extension, saying, "I am very proud to continue playing for this club. I wanted to extend my contract and, finally, the day has arrived. Real Sociedad have made a huge effort for this to happen and I only hope I can repay them out on the pitch."

Martinez continued, saying he is, "very happy to be able to continue for many more years."
