Juventus equals Serie A record by capturing 5th consecutive Scudetto

Juventus' monopolization of Serie A continues unabated, and the Bianconeri didn't even have to work for it. Technically speaking, anyway.

By virtue of Roma's 1-0 victory over Napoli on Monday, the Bianconeri, who did their part by winning Sunday, were officially crowned Serie A champions for a fifth straight season.

The consecutive quintet of crowns equals a record accomplished three times in Serie A history. The Old Lady was the first to retain the title five times in the 1930s, with the 'Grande Torino' side of the 1940s and Inter Milan's dominant team of the late 2000s also reaching the milestone.

This one, however, was unlike any of the four previous championships to be hoisted by the Turin-based club.

After a summer of heavy turnover - Carlos Tevez, Arturo Vidal, Andrea Pirlo and Kingsley Coman all departed - Juventus sputtered out of the gate, winning just three of its first 10 matches and finding itself mired all the way down in 15th place in mid-October.

What followed was dominance, pure and simple.

After losing 1-0 to Sassuolo on October 28, the reigning champion went on a tear, collecting 73 of a possible 75 points en route to the title.

The emergence of Paulo Dybala into one of the world's most electric attackers, along with Paul Pogba's resurgence after a rough start to the campaign, were complimented by Allegri's defence returning to the form of season's past, as Juventus' march to the championship was highlighted by a 974-minute shutout streak.

Though Champions League elimination at the hands of Bayern Munich - in heartbreaking fashion - was a difficult pill to swallow, the club still has the ability to claim another domestic double; the Coppa Italia final is set for May 21 against AC Milan.
