North Carolina has selected Mitch Trubisky to succeed Marquise Williams as the team's starting quarterback, head coach Larry Fedora announced Friday.

Trubisky, a junior, was favored to win the starting job after backing up Williams over the previous two seasons and looking good in limited action last year. He again looked comfortable throughout the spring, making Fedora's decision an easy one.

"I thought Mitch did a good job this spring and didn't just assume he was going to be the starter. He worked extremely hard and earned it," said Fedora. "We always want to have competition at every position. Mitch is the QB with the most experience returning, but he worked hard this spring, competed every day, and deserves to be the starter."

The former four-star recruit and dual-threat gunslinger was 40-of-47 for 555 yards and six touchdowns last season.

The Tar Heels open their season Sept. 3 versus Georgia.
